2013 Guitar Raffle

Tickets will be available in March for a beautiful guitar that will be signed by all our 2013 musicians!

The guitar, generously donated by Angus Borden Music and Entertainment is a new Ibanez V205SECE. It features a natural finish, solid spruce top, acoustic electric (pick up and tuner built in), and comes with a hard shell case.

Tickets will be $2 each or 3/$5. Tickets will be available at all BFS events, beginning with our Valdy show in March.

Help stop cuts to Barrie culture

The City of Barrie passed a motion to cut $50,000 from the Cultural Grant program. These grants are integral to the continued growth of culture in our city. The BFS has drafted a short letter to the Mayor Barrie and we encourage others to write their own letters. Below is our letter:

Mr. Mayor,

I am writing to respectfully request that council reconsider the $50,000 cut to the Cultural Grant program proposed in the budget motion 13-G-019, Paragraph 1, l, passed on Monday 21 January.

As a non-profit arts organization since 1999, the Barrie Folk Society has been able to grow only because of operational grant funding from the City of Barrie in the past few years. We are proud of our efforts to bring quality live, unique musical performances to Barrie and of the work we do to support local songwriters and musicians, in particular youth.

BarrieFolk Youth Showcase – Nov. 10/2012

The Barrie Folk Society presents their seventh annual Youth Song Showcase.

Ten finalists will perform in concert on Saturday November 10, 1 to 5pm at the Northwest Community Church (464 Ferndale Drive, Barrie). All friends, family and the general public are invited to hear the next generation of great Canadian songwriters. Admission is only $5. A portion of the proceeds from the showcase will go to Barrie’s Youth Haven. There will be light refreshments available from Grandmothers to Grandmothers.

This year’s performers are talented young musicians from all corners of Ontario. The songs chosen for the Showcase are: Armistice – Ben Turcotte; Falling – Georgie Luttrell; Left In the Darkness – Amy Carson Hunter; Nostalgia’s Not What It Used To Be – Chris Thompson ; Old Cold Pizza – Jayden Grahlman ; Outside the City – Chris Strazz; Sunroom – Anna Weibe; The Walls Forget – Marshall Veroni; When He’s Gone – Rebecca Hawker; and Beloved – Sydney DeLong. There will be a feature set from Scott Cooper, a wonderful songwriter and musician while the judges deliberate.

The Barrie Folk Society thanks Stellula Music in Schools for their sponsorship of this event.

Gordie Tentrees concert – August 30/2012

The Barrie Folk Society is pleased to present Gordie Tentrees in concert at the Barrie Yacht Club (One Johnston Street) on Thursday, August 30. The show starts at 7:30 p.m. Gordie will be joined by his four-piece band; Roger Marin will open the show.

Gordie’s new album North Country Heart is 12 swampy country blues songs layered with the storied delivery of a Texas word slinger. From the north. Songs smothered in traditional Yukon roots music featuring a unique take on stories that live in the Canadian north. Produced by Juno Award-winning Bob Hamilton the Canadian road warrior’s fifth full length album is his boldest effort yet.

“We took our time making it, I came in with more songs than ever, and after 14 years of living in the Yukon, I decided it was time to write about my home. I talk about the Yukon on and off the stage so much, confessing its secrets, and spreading my love for this sweet place, that harvesting these tales into songs felt long overdue. The bonus was making another album with Old Crow Studios & Bob Hamilton who has become not only a mentor but a friend. Someone to push me and care about what I am putting out. To capture time, and bleed art.”

Indeed. Album opener “Gypsy Wind” touches on the all too familiar themes of northern life and love, while the title track is a raucous ode to Tentree’s home, and in “Holy Moly” the singer “wrestles bears in my underwear”, a song about the things men do to impress women in the north. Personal themes abound as well (“Little Guy”, “Black Seeds”) and it will comes as no surprise that someone who has spent as much time on tour as Gordie has penned a few road songs (“Last Word”, “Sideman Blues”, “Wasted Moments”) for the album as well.

Livelier than the Tentrees WCMA nominated last album Mercy or Sin (2009) the Yukon songwriter feels like he is just getting started.

Gordie has taken to arrive here, has recently signed a publishing deal with Nashville’s Bluewater Music, is releasing his new album on Continental Records (Europe), and will take his gutsy roots driven touring band Hill Country News on a 120 CD release world tour that hits Canada, US, Europe, and the UK in 2012. The former school teacher, break dancer and golden gloves boxer is sure to be coming to a town near you this year.

Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman – October 19/2012

The Barrie Folk Society is partnering with the MacLaren Art Centre and various charities for an exciting fall concert series called FOLK FOR FOLKS. The October show takes place on Friday, Oct. 19 and features Karen Savoca and Pete Heitzman.

Born in northern NJ, the daughter of a big band singer, Karen Savoca’s baby diary reads “20 months, knows six songs.” She grew up singing, dancing and harmonizing around a piano, and by the age of five she was emceeing the school play.

Savoca puts her heart into a song the way a great actor throws herself into a role, charming audiences with a supple alto and a boundless range of expression. A gifted songwriter, she draws you into her world of humor and compassion, telling stories with grace and ease, as though you’ve been invited to her table for supper.

She first met Pete Heitzman at a jam session and found an ideal musical partner. An Alaskan reviewer dubbed him “the aurora borealis of guitar.”

Acoustic Guitar Magazine has said: “A true virtuoso of groove, Heitzman has a sly touch that, combined with Savoca’s in-the-pocket drumming and spectacularly soulful vocals, gives the duo the impact of a four-piece band.”

Savoca’s seventh solo release, Promise, was recorded in their 19th century church studio nestled deep in the hills of upstate NY. Promise is being lauded as her strongest collection of songs to date, hitting #1 on Alberta’s CKUA chart and #25 on the Euro/Americana Chart.

Karen and Pete have won seven SAMMY Awards. Their notable appearances include The Today Show, A Prairie Home Companion, Mountain Stage, Big Top Chautauqua, The Vancouver, Edmonton and Winnipeg folk festivals. They are also independent record producers who have scored several feature films and documentaries.
