An evening with Lynn Miles and Meredith Moon – Sept. 20

BarrieFolk is excited to host Stwo talented Canadian singer-songwriters, Lynn Miles and Meredith Moon on Friday, Sept. 20.

Coming from a country renowned for having outstanding singer-songwriters, Lynn Miles is considered Canadian songwriting royalty. With a Juno Award in 2003 for Roots Traditional Album of the year, Lynn subsequently scored Juno nominations in 2011 and 2006.She has taken home six Canadian Folk Music Awards including three for Songwriter of the Year.

Lynn has the ability to instantly convert listeners into lifetime fans. On her newest album (her 16th), TumbleWeedyWorld, she sings about the differences between people, which ultimately only demonstrates how we are so much the same. As always her ever-emotive voice carries each lyric with breathtaking clarity and heart-wrenching honesty. This album has been nominated for a Canadian Folk Music Award for Album of the year.

Lynn is a performing artist, public speaker, teacher, producer and imperfect human with an open heart, and a good sense of humour.

Meredith Moon comes from a musical family, but taught herself to play banjo when she was 21 by watching YouTube videos. Then she hit the road playing solo alongside a folk-punk band, tapping into a DIY network that enabled her to book her own tours: across North America, Central America and western Europe, including Croatia and the Czech Republic — many places that don’t often see a young female singer-songwriter playing Appalachian-style banjo. Bars, art spaces, house shows — it didn’t matter to Meredith.

While her album Constellations was finished in late 2019, for obvious global reasons, she kept it on the shelf for a while, a time during which she decided to sub out two old songs for new ones, recorded with a rhythm section. One of them is “That Town,” about the northern Ontario town of Wawa, best known for its enormous statue of a Canada goose.

With the release of Constellations, Moon is willing to do something she consciously avoided ever since she started writing songs: acknowledge her pedigree, the fact that her father’s name carries a lot of weight in musical history. The late Gordon Lightfoot is her dad.

Lightfoot took her on tour in 2022 for some Canadian dates. “That was my first time playing any shows with him,” says the songwriter who is now a decade into her own career. “He didn’t introduce me as his daughter. He completely understood and respected why I’d want that. He’d just say, ‘Give it up for Meredith Moon.’ That was really nice.”

The concert starts at 8 p.m. and takes place at Burton Avenue United Church (37 Burton Ave., Barrie). Doors open at 7:30 p.m. Please arrive promptly as latecomers will be seated during appropriate breaks in the show.

We host one on the second Wednesday of the month at the Painswick location near the Zehrs plaza (48 Dean Ave.). It runs from 6 to 8 p.m. Please note that the February open stage will take place on Feb. 13 to avoid any romantic Valentine's Day conflicts.

This will be a more traditional open stage with a sign-up board at the library. Spots will be filled on a first-signed-up basis that evening.

Jeff Miller will be your friendly host.  If you want more info on the Wednesday open stage, email Jeff or call him at 705.252.1750.

KC Patterson hosts the open stage at the downtown library location (60 Worsley St.). It takes place on the first Tuesday of the month.
